SpellABC.com is a spelling-practice website for children in kindergarten through grade 7, where every word is read aloud and practised across fifteen different exercise types.

Who publishes it

SpellABC.com is an independent project, not a product of any school, district or publisher. It is built and run by a single small team, and it is free to use while it is in beta. There are no advertisements on the site. Visits are counted with a self-hosted Umami instance, which sets no cookies, stores no cross-site identifier and builds no profile of any visitor — it is the only third-party script the site loads.

How the word library is built

The library holds 4,980 words spread across kindergarten to grade 7, balanced so no starting letter or word shape dominates a grade. Each word carries a child-facing meaning, an example sentence and a recorded reading of both — the word pronounced on its own, and the sentence that puts it in context — with a different voice assigned per grade so younger spellers hear a slower, clearer delivery. Words are drafted with a language model and then reviewed before they are marked ready for practice.

Because several exercise types have no visible prompt — the audio is the question — headphones are recommended, and every exercise carrying sound shows a headphones badge so a child knows to listen before answering.

How practice is scored

Scoring happens on the server, never in the browser, so a score always reflects what a child actually did. Effort pays: a wrong answer that was genuinely attempted still earns points, with bonuses for accuracy, speed and working without hints. Each of the 15 exercise types records its own timings and hint usage, which is what turns a progress report into something more useful than a percentage.

What we send to an AI model

Progress reports are generated by a language model, but it is blind about the child. No name, email address, account id, age or raw keystroke log ever leaves our database for a model — only aggregate practice statistics and the curriculum words themselves. A single code path builds every AI-bound payload, and automated tests fail the build if an identifying value appears in one. The full detail is in the privacy policy.

How children sign in

Children never need an email address or a password. A parent generates a one-time link and a six-digit PIN, opens it on the child's device, and that device stays signed in for up to 30 days. A parent can see every signed-in device and revoke any of them instantly.
